Connection:
Objects and Self-Identity

Objects carry both personal and social meaning, and ownership or usage increases the linkage between the object and the self (Wheeler, S.C., Bechler, CJ., 2021).

Our connection to objects that seem unimportant or disposable to others can be an important part of our identity. Students will make a series of work based on seemingly insignificant items that hold great importance in our lives. They will begin by photographing the pieces individually, highlighting the importance of the object and making a spectacle out of the seemingly ordinary.

Inspired by the work of artist Jennifer Trouton, they will then create a series of small studies of the works and carefully curate the display of these works to effectively communicate their significance in student’s lives.
